Admission –Youths who want to join the National Youth Service NYS training will now join with, atleast, D-(minus) high school grade.
The announcement made during the Thursday February 29 meeting of the National Assembly Committee on Cohesion and Equal Opportunities, indicated that the minimum Kenya Certificate of Secondary School grade was lowered to accommodate as many willing students as possible.
NYS Director General James Tembur shared that the move would also level the playing field for all youths, regardless of their background.
“The Ministry has lowered the mean grade to enable youths from disadvantaged communities to have an opportunity to join NYS,” Tembur told the Aden Yusuf Haji-led Committee.
In their reaction, Members of Parliament have termed the move as a good one and advised for equitable allocation of available slots.
“The president’s directive has heightened interest in joining NYS, making transparency and equal distribution of slots during recruitment crucial,” Nyeri Town MP Duncan Mathenge also highlighted.
Candidates must also be Kenyan citizens by birth, be aged between 18-24 years old, be physically fit and show proof of a certificate of good conduct issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations DCI.
Nakuru County MP Liza Chelule, who chaired the session, heaped praise on NYS’ latest recruitment for considering people with disabilities.
